The nanny industry has changed a LOT in the past few years… and many nannies are finding themselves increasingly disillusioned.
Working with WFH parents is now the norm, which also means being observed, interrupted, or second-guessed throughout the day in a way that just didn’t exist before.
At the same time, the rise of gentle/respectful parenting has completely reshaped how nannies do their jobs.
And while it’s meant to be a positive approach, it’s often confused with permissive parenting, which can make boundaries and behavior much harder to manage consistently.
There’s also a level of surveillance now that wasn’t common before, cameras, AirTags, constant check-ins.
And with that has come more micromanaging.
Then there are the expectations.
“Nanny” roles have slowly turned into hybrid positions, where “nanny” can mean anything from family cook to house manager to personal assistant to dog sitter… all under one title and one salary..
Add to that the rise of social media, which has made this job look easy and accessible, and fueled the belief that high-paying nanny jobs are the norm, not the exception. As a result, more people want to enter the field, and competition has increased.
The industry isn’t what it used to be.
And a lot of nannies are feeling it, with some even choosing to leave the field, despite still loving the work.
If you’ve been in the industry for a while, you’ll know exactly what this is about.
Nannies, what’s frustrating you the most right now?
What change would you most like to see in the industry?
