Getting a job offer feels exciting, but this is exactly when you need to slow down.
Many nannies only ask the real questions after they start… and that’s when problems begin.
Not every detail needs to be covered in the very first conversation. But before you accept any nanny position, you should have clear answers to the following:
1. Exact Schedule (Not Just “Approximate”)
Are the hours fixed or will they change weekly?
What happens if parents come home late?
2. Guaranteed Hours
Will you be paid if the family doesn’t need you?
This is a big one many nannies overlook.
3. Pay, Overtime & Benefits
What is your hourly rate?
Is overtime paid legally?
Are there any benefits (paid vacation, sick days, etc.)?
4. On-the-Books Pay
Will you be paid legally (declared income)?
This affects your protection, healthcare, and future rights.
5. Duties Beyond Childcare
Are you expected to do laundry, cooking, errands, pet care?
Get specific—“light housekeeping” means different things to different families.
6. Travel Expectations
Will you be expected to travel with the family?
Or will there be long periods where they travel without you?
7. Overnight Requirements
Will you ever be expected to stay overnight?
If yes, how often and how is it compensated?
8. Sick Days & Time Off
Do you have paid sick days?
What happens if you are sick? What if the child is?
9. Contract (Non-Negotiable)
A written agreement protects you and the family.
If there’s no contract, that’s a red flag.
10. Transportation
Will you be expected to drive the children?
If so, is a car provided or will you use your own (and be reimbursed)?
A serious family will respect that.
If they hesitate… that tells you everything.
