When you ask your nanny to come in later or leave earlier, or not come at all because you’re away, it’s not their choice not to work so it’s not fair to ask them to make up those hours if they want to get paid. And it’s not fair to assign them other responsibilities either, unless this has been agreed with the nanny in the contract.

Nannies need a consistent paycheck so if they are available to work as scheduled and it is your choice not to have them work, the question shouldn’t even arise, they still have to be paid!

And although most nannies are flexible with their schedules, they also need a good work-life balance. Like any other employee, nannies shouldn’t be expected to be available outside of their regular working hours to make up for unused time.

Your nanny’s hours must be guaranteed, not banked!
