☆ When the salary is not advertised

Yes, sometimes when the salary is not advertised, it can mean that it is ridiculously low. But that doesn’t always mean that.

Sometimes, if the salary is not advertised, it is simply to avoid attracting all those candidates who are primarily (if not solely) motivated by money rather than those who are genuinely interested in the position.

Sometimes it is also to avoid resentment from candidates because obviously they all expect to receive the highest figure in the advertised range, even if this figure is reserved only for the most qualified candidates.

Obviously it’s always better to have an idea of the salary offered from the outset, but sometimes you can miss out on great opportunities by refusing to apply when the salary isn’t advertised upfront…

☆ When the job description is vague

So many nanny advocates or coaches tell nannies to run when the job description isn’t detailed enough.

Again, yes, a vague job description can mean the family has unrealistic expectations, but that’s not always the case…

Just as many nannies don’t know how (or are too lazy to) write a proper profile, resume, or cover letter, many parents and recruiters don’t know how (or are too lazy to) write proper job descriptions.

Yes, it’s a pain to waste time because people don’t bother to give enough details, but in any case, you won’t necessarily be exploited if the job description is too vague.

And anyway, when people take the time to detail the requirements and expectations, candidates don’t care, they’re only interested in the salary or the word “ROTA”!

☆ When the agency is brand new

New nanny agencies and childcare businesses are popping up all the time. And when a position is advertised by a new company, it’s not necessarily a “scam”.

Many of these new agencies that are popping up are set up by nannies who can’t find work, it’s indeed highly unlikely they’ll be able to help other nannies find work if they haven’t been able to find work for themselves.

But many of these agencies are also set up by people who have many contacts and are completely legitimate in the industry, and an agency does not need to have been in business for a long time to have great positions to fill.

Unfortunately, you often have to be wary in this industry, but you shouldn’t see the bad in everything either. Not being open-minded enough can cause you to miss out on some great opportunities.

Sometimes the best jobs are the ones that seem the most suspicious at first… so never judge a job posting or agency too quickly!
