Many families who need long hours (more than 40 hours per week) often want to pay their nanny a weekly (or monthly) flat rate… they say that this is good because if they don’t need you, you still get paid…

This is not good, because if you are paid a weekly or monthly flat rate it is very likely that you will not be paid for every hour worked (or yes, you will be paid for each hour worked, but at a rubbish hourly rate!)

Often, these families just don’t want to pay overtime when they realize how much it’s going to cost in the end!

Legally, nannies have to be paid an hourly rate plus applicable overtime. In most countries overtime pay is the equivalent of 1,5 times the regular hourly rate, and everything over 40 hours per week is overtime!

So Nannies, think twice and do your calculations carefully before applying for a job with a weekly or monthly package, it is rarely to your advantage!
