Let’s talk about six-figure nanny jobs : how come the salaries are so high for some nanny positions? Where can you find these nanny jobs that pay more or less 100K a year?
We are always asked these two questions, so here are some answers.
Salaries do not only depend on experience, qualifications, number of children, responsibilities etc. they also depend on the cost of living in the city where the position is based. In some cities, nanny salaries are so high because it is simply impossible to live decently on less. In some major American cities, for example, you can’t find a place to live for less than $3,000 or $4,000 a month, and if you want to be able to pay all your other bills besides your rent and eat too, you have to earn six figures a year.
A few years back, when inflation was much lower, you needed years of experience to negotiate a six-figure salary. Now, in cities where the cost of living is very high, it is possible to negotiate this kind of salary even if you do not have years of experience, because you have to be able to pay your bills no matter how much experience you have. And it’s very frustrating for experienced nannies who have worked hard for years before they can earn this kind of salary to see that much less experienced nannies can now earn this kind of money when they are only at the beginning of their careers.
If you want to earn 100K a year, it’s very simple, you have to look in the major American or Canadian cities where the cost of living is high, like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Washington DC, Chicago, Vancouver etc…
Average-income families can rarely afford to employ a nanny in these cities, so you need to target more high-profile families. And if you don’t already live in these cities, you should be ready to relocate because most of the time these six-figure positions are live-out.
When we say to be ready to relocate, we mean relocating within the country, not from abroad. Many nannies based in Europe want to move to the United States to earn more and are seeking visa sponsorship. If you’re not already eligible to work in the US, being ready to relocate won’t help, as no one will sponsor you.
100K per year is definitely not the norm for a nanny, but in some cities, it’s just the minimum you need to earn to cover all your living expenses. Most nannies who earn 100K a year don’t save 100K a year. Once they’ve paid off their rent or mortgage and all their bills, they’re not saving as much as you might think…
It’s not just the United States and Canada that have a high cost of living. Some cities like London, Paris, Geneva, Monaco are very expensive, but unfortunately the nanny industry in Europe lags behind that of North America and nannies in Europe and the UK are nowhere near earning 100K a year.
