Sometimes you go into an interview thinking a job could be a great fit…
…and then you leave knowing it’s not for you.
But what happens when the family offers you the job anyway?
You can say no.
Here’s how to handle it professionally:
1. Thank them for the offer
Even if you know immediately that you don’t want the position, acknowledge the time they’ve taken and their confidence in you.
2. Don’t accept out of guilt
A family liking you doesn’t mean you have to accept the job.
An interview works both ways. They’re deciding if you’re the right nanny for them, and you’re deciding if they’re the right family for you.
3. You don’t need to over-explain
You can simply say that, after reflecting on the position, you don’t feel it’s the right fit for you.
You don’t need to list everything that put you off.
4. Be polite and clear
Try:
“Thank you so much for offering me the position. I really appreciate the opportunity and enjoyed meeting you. After giving it some thought, I’ve decided that the position isn’t the right fit for me, so I’ll have to decline. I wish you and your family all the best.”
5. Trust what you learned from the interview
Maybe the hours weren’t right.
Maybe the responsibilities were different from what you expected.
Maybe the family dynamic didn’t feel right.
Or maybe you simply can’t put your finger on it. You just know you don’t want the job.
That’s okay.
The goal of an interview isn’t just to get the job.
It’s to find the right job for YOU, too.
Have you ever thought “this isn’t the job for me” and then been offered the position anyway? How did you handle it?
