A strong answer to “Why do you want to leave your current nanny job?” stays positive, brief, and professional.

Keep the focus on yourself rather than your employer. Regardless of your current work circumstances, your response should highlight your personal aspirations, goals, and career trajectory, rather than pointing out your employer’s faults or your feelings about them.

Be honest without being too detailed. When answering this question, you don’t need to go into all the details.

Even if negative experiences have informed your decision to leave a job, it’s extremely important to find a positive way to explain your desire to move on.

There are many reasons why you might be looking for a new opportunity. For example, you can say:

“I’m looking for career growth.”

“I want to pursue a better opportunity.”

“I’m ready for a new challenge.”

“I feel like I’m ready to take on more responsibility.”

“I want to develop a new skill that isn’t required in my current job.”

“I would like different job duties.”

Avoid saying things like “I want to make more money” or “ I want a better work-life balance”.

These are perfectly normal things, but perhaps not the best things to bring up in a first interview.

Here are some samples of professional answers you can use in an interview:

☆ “I’ve loved working with my current family, but the position is no longer offering the level of growth and responsibility I’m looking for. I’m excited to find a role where I can contribute in new ways.”

☆ “The children I care for are older now and don’t need full-time care anymore, so I’m looking for a position where I can be more engaged day-to-day.”

☆ “My current family’s schedule has changed, and the hours are no longer consistent with what I’m seeking. I’m hoping to find a role with a schedule that aligns better with my availability.”

☆ “The family’s needs have shifted—they need fewer hours—so I’m looking for a new long-term fit.”

☆ “I’m looking for a position that aligns more closely with my caregiving style and long-term goals in childcare.”
