“Must have ROTA experience.”
And yet… how are you supposed to get ROTA experience if no one gives you your first ROTA role?
Here’s the truth:
You can be ROTA ready even without formal ROTA experience.
Families hiring for ROTA nanny positions (especially UHNW and high-profile households) are usually looking for three core things:
Experience in high-profile or confidential homes
Travel experience with families (international, flexible, last-minute)
Proxy parenting or 24-hour / overnight care experience
If you’ve worked in luxury households, travelled with families, managed sole charge abroad, or provided extended care — you already have transferable skills for a ROTA nanny role.
The key is positioning your CV correctly.
Instead of focusing on what you haven’t done (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off), highlight:
• Discretion & confidentiality
• Ability to work alongside full household staff
• Flexibility with travel
• Emotional stamina & independent decision-making
That’s what agencies and families are really screening for.
If you’re applying for ROTA positions and getting overlooked because you haven’t done ROTA before, here’s what you need to understand:
Families hiring ROTA nannies aren’t just hiring a schedule.
They’re hiring a lifestyle match.
If you don’t have formal ROTA experience, highlight the things that show you can already handle the ROTA lifestyle:
1️⃣ High-Profile / UHNW Experience
If you’ve worked with high-profile, public-facing, or ultra-high-net-worth families, say it clearly.
ROTA households are often:
• Private
• Security-conscious
• Structured
• Expecting discretion
• Used to staff who anticipate needs
If you’ve worked in an environment that required confidentiality, formality, or working alongside household staff — that matters.
Use words like:
• “Highly confidential household”
• “Worked alongside full estate team”
• “Maintained strict discretion and privacy protocols”
That signals readiness.
2️⃣ Travel Experience
ROTA families often travel — frequently and last minute.
If you’ve:
• Travelled internationally with families
• Packed, prepped, and managed children in transit
• Adapted to different time zones
• Provided sole charge in unfamiliar environments
That is GOLD.
Make it visible on your CV. Don’t bury it in one bullet point.
Travel = flexibility, resilience, organisation.
3️⃣ Proxy Parenting / 24-Hour Care
This is the BIG one.
If you’ve done:
• Overnight care
• Extended sole charge
• Weekend coverage
• Emergency cover
• Temporary full-time stints
You have experience managing children beyond a 9–5 structure.
ROTA is about:
• Emotional stamina
• Decision-making without supervision
• Consistency in routines
• Being “on” for extended periods
Spell that out.
✨ Reframe your experience.
You may not have done 2-weeks-on/2-weeks-off.
But if you’ve worked in high-demand, high-discretion, high-responsibility roles — you may already be operating at ROTA level.
Don’t let one line in a job description convince you you’re not qualified.
Sometimes it’s not about having ROTA experience.
It’s about showing that you’re ROTA ready.
