Job searching can be stressful, and when you’re eager to find the right position, it’s easy to overlook your own safety.
As you look for your next nanny position, remember that the people you’re communicating with are strangers until you’ve had the chance to get to know them. A few simple precautions can go a long way.
🛡️ Don’t include your full home address on your resume.
Your city, neighborhood, or ZIP/postal code is enough. Families don’t need your exact address until you’re hired.
📧 Don’t post your phone number or email publicly.
In Facebook groups or other public forums, ask interested families to send you a private message instead.
📄 Don’t post your full CV publicly.
Your resume contains a lot of personal information. Post a short introduction instead, and send your full resume privately to families you’re genuinely interested in speaking with.
👀 Research the family, too.
Ask questions, request references if appropriate, and trust your instincts. You’re interviewing them just as much as they’re interviewing you.
🤝 Meet safely for the first interview.
If possible, meet in a public place first. If you’re going to a family’s home, tell a trusted friend or family member where you’re going, who you’re meeting, and when you expect to be home.
🔒 Protect your documents.
Only share copies of your ID, certifications, or background check after you’ve confirmed the opportunity is legitimate and you’re comfortable moving forward.
❤️ Trust your gut.
If something feels off, it’s okay to walk away. The right family will understand if you have questions or want to take reasonable safety precautions.
Job searching can feel urgent, but don’t let that urgency make you forget that your safety comes first.
