Negativity, desperation, arrogance, rudeness,  complaining and laziness are attitudes that are never hired.

These attitudes are red flags for recruiters and potential employers and it is because they display these attitudes that many nannies (even very experienced ones) fail to find work.

It cannot be said enough: experience and qualifications are not enough to be noticed. Your attitude and the way you communicate are also assessed.

And sometimes attitude trumps skill, because skills can be taught while temperaments are difficult to change.

Here are some examples of what recruiters and employers don’t want to see in candidates:

  • Greediness
  • Saying yes to everything
  • Agreeing to anything
  • Over-enthusiasm
  • Lack of manners or etiquette
  • Being late
  • Delayed communication
  • Oversharing
  • Waffling
  • Lack of authenticity
  • Too much emotionality
  • Badmouthing a former employer / another recruiter
  • Complaining that you didn’t get a response
  • Blaming other people for your problems
  • Whining
  • Claiming to have no flaws
  • Lack of self-awareness
  • Lack of resilience
  • Getting defensive
  • Reluctance to learn from others
  • Inability to take feedback
  • Bragging that you are in demand
  • Being cocky
  • Entitlement
  • Wanting to control everything
  • Wanting to teach others how to do their jobs
  • Asking too many questions
  • Lack of genuine enthusiasm
  • Lack of career goals
  • Expect everything from others

The recruiter or employer should not think these things about you if you want your application to be successful.

By being mindful of these red flags, you can present yourself in the best possible light and increase your chances of success.
