Nannies and babysitters both provide child care, but there are some key differences between them.

What is a Nanny?

Nannies are child care professionals. Being a nanny is typically as full time career.

Nannies are employed on a part time or full time basis and they can live in or out of the home. They work for a single family, maximum two.

Nannies are usually developmentally focused, usually with educational backgrounds and/or training. They usually have many years of experience.

Nannies provide consistent child care and they work set hours, usually in your home. They meet many of a child’s needs, caring for children physically, socially, and emotionally.

Some Nannies help with homework while others complete cleaning-related tasks, like laundry or tidying a child’s room.

Nannies also help to run the house including cooking, cleaning, laundry, and more.

Nannies give your child one-on-one attention. They are generally more flexible than, say, a daycare center.

Nannies tend to be more expensive than daycare centers and babysitters. They are entitled to a higher salary and they must be issued an official paycheck.

Finally, Nannies becomes a deeply connected part of the family.

What is a Babysitter?

Babysitters tend to be as-needed caregivers. Babysitting is usually supplemental income.

Babysitters work on an occasional basis and they can work for multiple families.

Most Babysitters are not as experienced as Nannies (many are teenagers or individuals looking to make extra money). They might have no prior experience.

Their duties also differ, i.e. a Babysitter’s main focus is watching your child—and keeping them safe. They are hired to watch children after-school or while parents enjoy an evening out. They entertain children with fun activities, they can help with homework. Babysitters perform minimal household duties.

Sitters are usually available on short notice, they are flexible and work nights and/or weekends.

Babysitters cost less than a Nanny, as they are typically employed for shorter windows of time. They are usually paid per hour (usually cash in hand).

Both Nannies and Babysitters care for children while parents are away, but Nannies are more involved. Nannies play a bigger part in the children’s lives.
