About the job
A wonderful family very well known to Great British Nannies is seeking a qualified and experienced live-in rota Governess, to care and educate lovely intelligent and engaging girl, aged 8. Their daughter has been accelerated a year at school so is currently in Year Four and needs homework support with the usual subjects (mainly Maths and English Key Stage 2), as well as going forward support for her applications to boarding school. Familiarity with entrance exams would be a plus. Besides the educational focus, the family would like a fun and active candidate who will continue to engage the child in fun, educational age-appropriate activities which focus on the continuation of her physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing whilst having a lot of fun in the process and continuing to support and promote her learning and natural curiosity in life.
The family would prefer a PGCE qualified teacher, British educated and familiar with the British curriculum. An additional language would be a bonus, especially Italian. The family are American/British with Italian roots. However, any additional language would be considered.
Duties include waking the child up, supervising her morning routine, then accompanying the child to and from school (the family has a driver, although a driver is preferred and will have access to an automatic vehicle), ensuring she has all she needs for the day including uniform, sports kit, and homework. During the day there is wardrobe maintenance and management of her toy room, but no real nursery duties are required - no cooking or laundry as the friendly household is fully staffed. However, someone who is confident in cooking and assisting with that, when necessary, would be preferred. Their current governess prepares breakfasts but someone who is confident in the kitchen if the cook isn’t working will be favoured to prepare simple, healthy meals.
The governess will need to accompany her to her extracurricular activities and supervise her music practice at home. Diary management will be needed to keep track of her activities, medical appointments, sports fixtures, birthday parties and so on. The governess will eat with the girl, an emphasis on good table manners is encouraged, then after assisting with homework and music practice will be responsible for supervising her bedtime routine, showering her etc and putting her to bed after her bedtime reading.
Travel with the family will be expected, usually several times a year (you will have your own room while travelling). Own bedroom and bathroom in the family home, on the top floor. Family has three dogs (two small and one large), and three horses, so liking animals is a must. Their other governess was also placed by us last year and she adores the family - the switch to rota is to allow greater flexibility and wraparound care for the family. They are seeking a real team player, who will work excellently alongside their current governess and be flexible when needed.
A competitive salary will be offered for this role, the start date is flexible, although pending a successful trial 2-4 week, a beginning of July start date could be considered. They are not rushing the process as it is more important that they find the right candidate and will take their time to ensure they do so.
This role will suit someone who is looking to work within a very welcoming family and team who all work together to ensure the overall wellbeing of their daughter is maintained to exceptional standards. Someone who is looking to be in rota role for at least 2 years. The schedule will be 2 weeks off/2 weeks on, although this may be increased or reduced from time to time depending on the family’s travel periods and the governesses should work together to ensure that this is a seamless process for the family.
